In July 2003, Science and Innovation Minister Lord Sainsbury announced a cash injection of £90 million over the next six years to help industry harness the commercial opportunities offered by nanotechnology. Within this initiative, the DTI allocated £50m for an applied research programme to support collaborative research and development projects and technology transfer initiatives, and £40m for Capital Projects for a UK MNT Facilities Network. The MNT network was set up to manage this process for a three year period and kick-start the exploitation of MNT within the UK.
In 2007 the Nanotechnology KTN was formed to continue the activities of the Network. The Nanotechnology KTN will support the exploitation and commercialisation of micro and nanotechnologies (MNT) through informing, linking and facilitating innovation and collaborations between suppliers and users with the aim of building a vigorous UK MNT community.
